June 18th, 2013 – Robert C. Jones

On this week’s edition of Sentients, my guest will be Robert C. Jones, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at CSU, Chico. Robert C. Jones received his PhD in philosophy from Stanford University in 2005 where his doctoral research examined the moral significance of nonhuman animal cognition. His professional research investigates the substantive cognitive properties that bear on the ethical treatment and moral considerability of both human and nonhuman animals. In addition, his research includes food ethics, environmental ethics, mind and cognition, species studies, and the question of what it is to be human. He currently writes for the online blogging site, Ethics and Animals.

Recently, Robert gave a talk (below) at The Center for Science, Technology, Medicine and Society at UC Berkeley titled “Eating Animals: A Funny Kind of Love”. The program will start off with the audio from that talk, followed by a conversation about veganism and the ethics of eating animals.

April 16, 2013 – AB 343, California’s Anti-Whistleblower Legislation

Undercover investigations by animal-welfare groups like Mercy for Animals have led to landmark corporate animal-welfare-policy reforms, new and improved laws to protect farmed animals and the environment, felony convictions of animal abusers, increased consumer protection and food safety initiatives, and the closure of particularly corrupt facilities. Assembly Bill 343, the “ag-gag” bill recently introduced in California, has been under fire from animal activists and seemingly protected by those in the animal agriculture industry. What does legislation like this mean for the animals and for our food safety? On the phone with me today will be Matt Rice, Director of Investigations with Mercy for Animals. We’ll be discussing AB 343 and similar bills that have been introduced in other states.

January 8, 2013 – Guest, Tracy Mohr – Topic, Chico Animal Shelter

Last February, the City of Chico took charge of the animal shelter formerly ran by the Butte Humane Society. What does this change mean to the stray and surrendered animals in Chico? On the phone with me today is Tracy Mohr, Animal Services Manager with the Chico Animal Shelter. We will be discussing the recent policy changes that will affect the shelter’s animal acceptance policies and positively impact the lives of the animals that enter the Fair Street facility. Tune in today at FM 90.1 KZFR in Chico or online at www.kzfr.org at 5:30pm PST.

Chicoans, this is a very important topic and should prove to be informative. If you’re curious as to what the policy changes will be and how it’ll impact the stray, surrendered (owner relinquished) and feral cats, you should definitely tune in.

And, as always, be good humans.
